Best Lip Balms Under $5

When you’re applying any makeup product you need to make sure that your skin is prepped correctly for the best possible result. The same goes for your lips! So whether you are looking for a lip product to wear well with liner, lipstick and gloss or just on its own for softer lips, here are my top five lip balms UNDER $5.

1. Total Hydration Lip Balm by Chapstick

Retails for $3.29-$4.29 at Target and CVS

I’ve been using the coconut flavor from this line by Chapstick for a few years now and it has consistently been a great moisturizing lip balm. I’m not the biggest fan of menthol or anything like that, but there are flavors with essential oils if you’re interested in that kind of thing. I really enjoy this one because it’s soft and doesn’t leave an overly waxy or balmy feeling on your lips, but still hydrates them well. This one works the best for me under other lip products, like liner and lipstick. So if you’re looking for a balm that wears well with makeup, this is definitely it.

2. Burt’s Bees Vanilla Bean Lip Balm by Burt’s Bees

Retails for $3.49 at Target

Alt Text: Yellow tube with dark blue stripe that says “Vanilla Bean” next to dark blue cap.

Of all the classic lip balms from Burt’s Bees, the most moisturizing I’ve used is this one specifically in the flavor Vanilla Bean. Something to consider with Burt’s Bees, is that the lip balms have very similar base ingredients but each flavor has something unique added in, whether that’s additional flavor or essential oils, or moisturizing seed extracts or butters. I can be sensitive to certain oils or menthol but their Vanilla Bean lip balm is a solid pick for me out of all the other flavors I’ve tried and I’d certainly recommend it.

3. Lip Repair Stick by Aquaphor

Retails for $4.89 at Target

This dye free and fragrance free option from Aquaphor is great choice for severely dry and sensitive lips. There are little to no possible irritants formulated in it. With skin softening shea butter and beeswax, plus a few oils for intense moisturizing, this lip balm is perfect for using on the go and on no makeup days. It’s like a tub of Aquaphor in a stick, but better. I don’t know if this would wear well under other lip products but I think it would be nice over top liner or a stain.

4. 100% Natural Lip Balm Stick from Eos

Retails for $3.19 at Target

Alt Text: Cardboard packaging with image of watermelon on the left and pink tube with a mint cap on the right.

Eos was pretty famous in the 2010s for their colorful “egg shaped” lip balms before branching out into other skincare products, and eventually releasing tube lip balms as well. This one is watermelon scented and one of the tube balms, since I vividly remember struggling to carry around the original shape trust me when I say you will definitely want the more streamlined version. These were fun to collect way back since the packaging is colorful but the product itself is also pretty good. Shea butter, beeswax and about three other moisturizing oils make this pack a solid punch for being so cheap, all of the flavors are very hydrating so you really can’t go wrong with Eos.

5. ANY Lip Balm with SPF

Okay, so this technically isn’t one singular product but it is definitely an important to stress that everyone should pick up a lip balm that has SPF in it, especially if you will be going outside or driving around for an extended period of time. If you’ve never been sunburned on your lips, congratulations. I have, and it is the most aggravating feeling you can imagine so definitely keep an SPF lip product on hand. I’ve used Sun Bum and regular Chapstick brand with SPF and honestly, they both taste awful but if I’m going to be outside for a while it’s better than nothing.
