My Top 3 Under $10: Neutral Eyeshadow

As long as you have some eyeshadow that is complimentary to your own skin tone, you can use those as a base for other more dramatic, colorful looks or just to accentuate your natural features. Here are my top three eyeshadows for creating some definition without going over the top (at least not yet) or over budget.

*For reference, my skin is pretty pale (L’OrĂ©al True Match W1) and these products will likely be too sheer or need a white base used underneath to have them show up true to color on medium/tan or deeper skin tones, but please leave some of your favorite neutral or basic eyeshadows of any and all shades in a comment!

1. Eye Lux Eyeshadow from L.A. Girl

Retails for $5 to $7 at CVS and online at L.A. Girl

These little quads from L.A. Girl were around before another “bite sized” one swept up the beauty community, and they are the Eye Lux Eyeshadow palettes. As of posting this, there are seventeen different combinations but I will be focusing on “Urbanize” the all matte, neutral one. The shades in this are your basic tones for contouring your eyes and make for an easy eyeshadow look on it’s own. The colors are true to pan and blend nicely with little to no fallout or patchiness. These are great for someone starting out with eyeshadow or just practicing placement of color since they are so easy to blend.

2. L.A. Colors Eyeshadows

Retails for $1 to $9 in store at Dollar Tree, online at L.A. Colors, online at ShopMissA

Alt Text: Square palette holding twelve neutral brown and rose tones with a dual tip sponge applicator.

The dollar store should never be forgotten! These eyeshadow palettes are a steal, but some of these are better than others in regards to pigmentation. If you want something sheer or easy to work with if you tend to be heavy handed with application, the twelve pan eyeshadows that can be found at Dollar Tree or ShopMissA are a great option for you and are about $1. For days when you just want a quick and easy eye look, these palettes are fool proof. Of course, there are shadows from this brand that have more color payoff, but there are so many I honestly recommend checking them out yourself, I promise you will be pleasantly surprised.

3. Bite-Size Eyeshadow from E.l.f.

Retails for $3 online at E.l.f.

Alt Text: Small rectangular palette with four warm neutral colors

You had to know this would be here. These little palettes from E.L.F. blew up the internet for a reason, and I would argue the one that really did it was the quad “I Love You A Latte” with four matte neutral shades. These are very soft eyeshadows and unlike the 12 pan shadows from L.A. Colors, the pigment can get a little intense if you’re not careful. Since they are softer shadows there is a little fallout (for me, it’s the darkest shade) from them, but if you remember to really tap off the excess pigment from your brushes and use a lighter hand, these can quickly become a staple product.
